As easy as it was to pull the toboggans on ice, it was super hard to pull them up a hill on land. I had a three person tent plus a stove plus my gear. At night, we turned the toboggans on their sides so they wouldn’t freeze to the ice. It was too hard to pull them apart, but luckily they loosed up after a few seconds over the coals. That night I think it was around zero degrees. Not our coldest night. When I’d comment on the cold weather the Canadians took the opportunity to remind me that it was a warm day. Although I did want it to get pretty cold to test out my gear, and I got my wish on my last night when it dipped down to 15 degrees below zero. This funny looking tree had its base eaten by a beaver. Beavers area all over the place here and we saw a couple beaver lodges while on the ice. I learned that beavers eat 100% wood for their diets! They must have a pretty strong digestive system. So the beavers will create dams to flood an area and then when they chop down bigger trees, the trees will float and they can move them around to build their lodge where they reside. Dave and Kie manage what is called a trapline, which is a square area following the waterways (in the past they ran a trip called Life on the Trapline). Bergen is the second biggest city in Norway after Oslo. When you see epic photos of fjords, this is the area. In fact I learned there are over 1,200 fjords in Norway! I learned this is because back in the 1500 and 1600s copper mining was a big thing and a byproduct was red tinged iron oxide protected wood from rot and insects. In the 1700 and 1800s, red became associated with prosperity, as it copied the look of expensive brick buildings. Now it’s part of the lore and the look is widespread. This is a famous museum in Sweden that was built by the founder of Baby Bjorn. The small towns of TN, AL and MS did exactly that for the three of us. People of all colors, shapes, sizes and economic backgrounds have been extremely nice to us and went out of their way to help. Except for the white truck that passed us way too close. Twice. Raziel, Mark and I rode 500 miles on the Natchez Trace Trail and so grateful my body can do this. Couldn’t ask for better road conditions or better company. We spent the night at Canemount Plantation Inn, a beautiful family owned bed and breakfast on 40 acres. Most of their guests were typically visiting Alcorn State University, a HBCU about two miles away, so we were the odd cyclists who ventured ten miles off the Trace to check it out. We visited the Remington Carriage Museum in Cardston and learned about the history of the area and how everyone got around before cars. Several carriages from back in the day we learned were valued today over $300,000, and had wood wheels with natural rubber, or metal, tires.
